Tar paper sheets, each measuring approx 12 inches by 24 inches. (30.5cm by 61cm).
Tar paper is popular with potters for both hand building and wheel throwing. This tar paper is the 15 pound weight, also known as Roofing Felt #15. Its the thinner version of tar paper available and can be used with electronic cutting machines, such as the Silhouette Cameo.
I use tar paper as a template for handbuilding, as can be seen in the video below. For this simple rectangular template the paper can be easily cut by hand with a craft knife and metal ruler. A cutting machine such as a Cameo or Cricut can be used for more precision, or with a more detailed template. Tar paper can also be used with slab construction. It is stiff enough to provide support during construction and drying, and easy to peel away once the clay is harder.
Tar paper can also be used as a throwing bat on the wheel, and once the clay is dry enough the tar paper can be simply peeled off the pottery, saving the potter from having to 'wire off' the piece.
